The Olympia School District utilizes 20 AmeriCorps members to connect with students in all three levels of education: elementary, middle and high school focusing on school connection, academic support, and Pre-AVID and AVID. Members partner with school administration, school staff and parent-teacher organizations to offer students extra-curricular and in-school activities that enhance the sense of belonging.
Academic Support: At the elementary level members run small group tutoring sessions for reading and math, guided by the district curriculum and school Reading and Math Specialists. At the middle and high school levels the members provide individualized tutoring to help students with past-due and current assignments. They conduct grade checks and discuss data with students and teachers to create a plan moving forward based on the data and the teacher policy for late assignments. They tutor students in the areas of organization, effective communication, and self-advocacy in addition to the subject matter of the course.
School Connection: In all levels of education members undertake projects, in collaboration with school leaders, such as school gardens, harvest festivals, community meals, reading competitions and cultural celebrations.
Pre-AVID and AVID: Members tutor and mentor youth individually and in small groups of 2-4 students regarding topics such as small group study skills, college readiness, and imbed the WICOR focus of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading skills.
