Serve Washington is pleased to host the annual AmeriCorps Swearing-In Ceremony (also known as “The Launch”) on Friday, October 26th at the Fisher Pavilion in Seattle. The event celebrates service and witnesses hundreds of national service members beginning their year of service by taking the AmeriCorps oath. As part of the 2018 ceremony, Serve Washington is honored to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Washington Reading Corps with both past and current leadership. In the afternoon members and staff will have the opportunity to participate in an outdoor service project or attend a training on situational awareness.

Agenda

10:00 a.m. - Noon ~ Swearing-In Ceremony

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. ~ Situational Awareness Training

One of the biggest challenges any person faces is learning how and why to trust their own gut feelings when they sense an imminent threat or proxemic danger. This training will teach how to use the 5 Color Codes, or mind states of awareness, to be more aware of your surroundings while interacting with those around, and realizing when it’s time to implement a plan of action and mitigate the risk of an assault. Learn why recognizing body language precursors to violence could save your life. This training is presented by Jesus M. Villahermosa, Jr., a former deputy sheriff with Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and a member of their S.W.A.T. Team.

Or

1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. ~ EarthCorps Outdoor Service Project

An environmental service project has been organized by EarthCorps, to take place after the ceremony, rain or shine, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. at Discovery Park in Magnolia. Sign-up here.
