Everyone deserves fair and equal access to healthy food. United Way of King County aims to break down the barriers to healthy food, particularly in communities of color and in immigrant and migrant communities.
We help reduce childhood hunger by partnering with communities to increase participation in federal meals programs including school breakfast, afterschool meals, summer meals and public benefits like SNAP and WIC. Our AmeriCorps members serve collaboratively to connect directly with families to understand their food needs. Members connect families with food resources including meals for youth, grocery boxes, community meals sites, and federal programs like SNAP and WIC. AmeriCorps members build relationships with families and youth and maintain those relationships over the course of their service term. Members support other key projects at their service site including youth enrichment activities and nutrition education. Members coordinate with local community partners, including school districts and nonprofits, to increase community food security.
