Inslee, Murray, Jayapal to be recognized for support of national service

Washington officials among select bipartisan group of national service champions being honored

OLYMPIA, Wash. Recognizing the exceptional support and commitment of Washington state officials for national service, Voices for National Service will honor Gov. Jay Inslee, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal at the 15th Annual Friends of National Service Awards in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 13, 2018.

Inslee will be honored with the State Leadership Award for leadership and innovation in leveraging national service to meet state needs. Murray will receive the Congressional Service Award, given for remarkable commitment to national service as a strategy to solve local and national issues. Jayapal will receive the Outstanding New Member Award, given for elevating national service as a first-term legislative priority.

“This is a tremendous honor to have three Washingtonians among the 20 individuals to be honored by Voices for National Service,” said Debbie Schuffenhauer, executive director of Serve Washington, the state’s commission on service and volunteerism. “Each award winner has raised public awareness of national service and elevated service as a national priority.”

“Washington lawmakers understand the role national service can play in helping address pressing challenges in local communities. When federal budget cuts have threatened the investment in Corporation for National and Community Service, Murray and Jayapal have worked to protect the funding,” said AnnMaura Connolly, president of Voices for National Service.

The trio join a bipartisan group of 20 distinguished leaders in government, business and journalism from across the nation being honored, including Sens. Roy Blunt, R-MO, Bill Cassidy, R-LA, Chris Coons, D-DE and John McCain, R-AZ; Reps. Doris Matsui, D-CA and Billy Long, R-MO, and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour. Honorees were selected based on recognition of and support for national service as a solution to some of the nation’s most pressing challenges. Click here for a list of honorees and event details.
