Serve Washington, FEMA Region 10 Partners Offer CERT Trainings

OLYMPIA—Serve Washington's Citizen Corps and FEMA Region 10 have partnered to offer a series of CERT training courses in local communities throughout 2023.
CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Teams. CERT members are all volunteers. They receive education in disaster preparedness for disasters that may impact their area. They also learn basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and basic disaster medical operations.
Basic CERT: The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.
Train the Trainer: This series is required to become a CERT program instructor. Instructors facilitate CERT courses and training exercises. Train the Trainer courses are a duration of three days. The target audiences for Train the Trainer are program trainers or coordinators with CERT knowledge who are committed to serving as instructors in their communities and are willing to be included in a statewide instructor database.
Prerequisites for Train the Trainer include: 1) completion of basic CERT (online or in person), 2) referral letter from a CERT sponsoring agency, 3) Endorsement by state CERT coordinating agency and 4) endorsement by local CERT program manager
Program Manager: This three-day course gives participants knowledge, skills and tools to manage a CERT program, establish and oversee successful teams. The course is targeted to program trainers, coordinators and managers with knowledge of CERT who are committed to serving as a CERT program manager in their communities and are willing to help teams to launch and sustain their CERT teams.
Prerequisites for Program Manager include 1) completion of basic CERT (online or in person), 2) referral letter form CERT sponsoring agency 3) endorsement by a state CERT coordinating agency
NOTE: All courses are in-person. Face masks are strongly encouraged, though not required.
